Where to take the kids in Chatham

A short list from the front desk — outdoor when it's nice, indoor when it isn't, and one farm worth the drive.

It usually comes up on day two of a family stay. The drive is over, everyone's slept, and now somebody (usually the smallest somebody) wants to know what we're doing today.

Here's the short version of what we tell parents at the front desk. Everything below is a fifteen-minute drive or less from 420 Grand Avenue East — with one exception we'll flag.

When the weather cooperates

A delicious breakfast spread

Kingston Park is the default answer. Big playground, walking trail around the perimeter, a long grass hill kids will roll down until you make them stop. There's a splash pad that's been the main draw — quick note: it's been closed for mechanical repairs at the time of writing, so call the city or check chatham-kent.ca before you go if water play is the whole point of the trip.

Tecumseh Park is downtown, smaller, but worth knowing about during festivals and summer events. Canada Day mornings happen here. So do a number of community events from May through September.

Tiffin Centre for Conservation is the bigger one. Three hundred acres of forest, wetlands, and meadows about twenty minutes northeast — the only spot on this list outside Chatham proper. Walking, biking, and in winter, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Bring water and snacks; there's no shop on-site.

When the weather doesn't cooperate

Flying Squirrel Trampoline Park is the rainy-day answer. Wall-to-wall trampolines, foam pits, dodgeball court. Socks-with-grippers required — they sell them at the desk if you forgot. Two hours is the sweet spot. Anything longer and the kids get over-tired and cranky.

Level Up! Arcade & Bowling does both at once. Older kids gravitate to the arcade tokens, younger ones to bumper bowling. Better for ages six and up; smaller kids will struggle with the bowling weight.

When you want them to learn something

The Chatham-Kent Museum has a permanent exhibit on the area's car manufacturing history that surprises most visiting kids — Chatham was a real auto town once. It's small enough to do in an hour, which is the right amount of museum for most families.

The Buxton National Historic Site & Museum is twenty minutes south, near North Buxton, and tells the story of the Underground Railroad in Canada. Worth the drive for school-aged kids who've covered any of this in class. The artifacts and original buildings give it weight a textbook can't.

When you want them outside, hands dirty

Pardo's Berrie Farms is pick-your-own depending on the season — strawberries through July, raspberries and blackberries into August, peaches and blueberries when in season. Kids will eat their weight on the rows. Factor that into what you pay for.

TJ Stables does pony rides for the small ones and trail rides for older kids. Birthday parties are their thing, and they run summer day camps if you're staying longer than a weekend.

Fall only

Thamesville Maize opens late September through October. Corn maze, hayrides, the usual lineup of pumpkin-patch fall activities. Half an hour east. If you're staying with us in October, build a Saturday around it.

A few things worth knowing

  • Most of these places close earlier than you'd expect for a city. The arcade and trampoline park stay open into the evening; almost everything else wraps by 5 or 6pm.
  • The Chatham-Kent parks page on the city's website has the most accurate hours and any closure notices. Check before driving anywhere with a kid in the back seat.
  • Family suite at Kent Motel sleeps four with two double beds and has a fridge. Useful for berry leftovers, leftover pizza, and quick breakfasts when you've got an early day at the maze.
